Dr. P. B.Vidyasagar has been working
in the field of Medical and Health Physics for the last twenty
years. The significant contributions that he has made assume more
importance on the following background. He has started his work in
this field at the times when it was little known in the University
system. Over the years he has been able to develop the tradition of
interdisciplinary studies by introducing various courses and also
motivating students to undertake research programs in this field. He
has been able to attract students from other developing countries
such as Bangladesh, Iran and Indonesia to work in his laboratory.
The students trained under his guidance are successfully conducting
research in their respective countries. He has published his
research work in internationally acclaimed journals. The following
brief account brings out his important contributions in the areas of
research, teaching and science popularization Dr. Vidyasagar has made unique and significant contributions at the interface of science and society through scientific writing. Over the years he has participated in science popularization programs organized by Govt. of India and other Non Governmental Organizations. He has to his credit 13 books (Marathi and English), about 150 articles in news papers and magazines, 25 Radio talks, Ten educational films, about 100 lectures on science subjects at remote places, school and colleges. One of his books has been translated in Kannada language and has been serialized in a weekly. The other book has been read on All India Radio for one year. One of his books Superclone is used as a text book for M.A. Marathi degree of Pune Univ. His academic and social contributions are duly recognized by the academic and social organizations and have bestowed on him prestigious awards such as Best Teacher award by University of Pune, Vidya Vyas Puraskar by Vidya Sahakari Bank and G. R. Paranjape award by Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad. Dr. Vidyasagar has been awarded Regular and senior associate ship by AS-ICTP. Teaching and Education :
Dr Vidyasagar has designed, modified
and taught courses at undergraduate and post graduate level related
to biophysics and medical instrumentation. He has also been
instrumental in establishing degree courses such as B.Sc. (applied)
(optometry) and B.Sc.(applied) (Biomedical Techniques). He has
conducted refresher courses for college teachers on a national
basis. Interactive software tools that have been developed by his
research team can be used for applications in the hospital as well
as for medical education. Dr Vidyasagar has himself participated in
the Curriculum Development Program of University grants Commission
and helped in introducing an interdisciplinary component in physics
curriculum. He has participated in a UNESCO project on physics
education and edited a book on Foundation Course in Physics. He has
worked as an assistant editor of Physics Education Journal,
published by the UGC, New Delhi and brought out special issues on
Biophysics. He has worked as an associate director for the National
Talent Search Program and Kishor Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, Govt.
of India, and as a coordinator National Eligibility Test for college
teachers by UGC, New Delhi. At present he is working as a convener
of the Board of Studies to design the syllabus and write text books
for the IXth and Xth std. to be used by 1.4 million students in the
state of Maharashtra. Worked as a member of the Xth UGC plan
committee and member of Center For Advanced Studies, assessment
committee for Molecular Biophysics Unit, I.I.Sc, Bangalore. Many
other evaluation and coordination committees of the University, UGC,
Govt, Maharashtra and NCERT, New Delhi.
